On 16th October 2013, Mr. Shigenobu Kobayashi the Charge d’ Affaires at Embassy of Japan in Malawi handed over four recycled fire engines to Lilongwe City Council.

The Government of Japan awarded Lilongwe City Council a grant amounting to $122,135 under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects for the Project for Procurement of Recycled Fire Engines for Lilongwe City Council. This grant facilitated shipping of four fire engines from Japan to Malawi. These fire engines are a kind donation from Japan Fire Fighting Association, Fukuoka-city and Tokyo Fire Department through the Society for Promotion of Japanese Diplomacy.

The Lilongwe City Council through the engineering department plays an important role to save people’s lives and properties in times of disasters. The Fire fighting team in this department has the responsibility to control fire outbreaks within Lilongwe and its surrounding districts like Salima, Mchinji and Dedza. Unfortunately, the team had inadequate capacity to effectively and efficiently respond to fire outbreaks because they had only three fire engines in a good condition.

The donated four fire engines will enable Lilongwe City Council to operate seven reliable fire engines. It is anticipated that response time to emergency calls will be shortened, and capacity of the fire fighting team in Lilongwe city will be expanded to manage disasters for 700,000 people living in the city.
